A walk around the neighborhood

I am loving this warm spring weather.  My favorite season.  Everything is fresh and green and there is color everywhere.  It's the perfect time for taking walks.

These bright pink azaleas are in our front yard.  I look forward to seeing them bloom every year.

Coastal beauties

Galen and I took a day trip on Saturday and drove to the coast. North Carolina has some beautiful coastal towns. We headed east toward Plymouth, then Belhaven, and then to Edenton.


One of my most favorite things to do is meander through the towns and look at all the houses.






These are some of the beauties that we saw.

Historic Edenton just happened to have a street festival going on down by the waterfront when we got there.

We toured The Cupola House and Gardens.

We had lunch at a coffee shop on Broad Street.

Being near the water just makes me happy ~ I love the coast.

Even though it was 98 degrees that day, hot and humid, it was still enjoyable.

I feel fortunate that we live close enough to the coast and close enough to the mountains that we can visit both.

Flowers and houses...

Come walk with me and I'll show you some of the houses and flowers in my neighborhood. Spring is in full bloom.

This pink azalea (below) is in our front yard beside the driveway and puts on a show every spring.

Do you remember the movie Norma Rae?

Based on a true story.......I didn't realize it, but, it took place in a small town less than an hour away from us ~ Roanoke Rapids. Interested in seeing if the mill was still standing, Galen and I took a drive up there on the weekend (it's just north of us on 95).

The mill is still standing. The JP Stevens Mill (below).

It's in the process of being torn down. The plant closed in 2003 laying off 320 workers.

I was interested in seeing the factory houses where the workers lived.

The houses are located in an area around the mill.

Below is the main street of Roanoke Rapids.

There is also a paper mill outside of town, and below is the canal museum.

Here is the high school. Reminds me of my old high school.

The lady behind the inspiration of the making of this movie is Crystal Lee Jordan Sutton. Born and raised in Roanoke Rapids and died of brain cancer in 2009. The movie was not filmed here in Roanoke Rapids, but in Opelika, Alabama.

It was interesting to see the town and the mill after watching the movie last week and then watching the special features. That's when we found out it took place nearby and wanted to check it out.
