Change happens everyday, and a lot of changes can occur over 15 years. That's how long we've lived in our home, now called Mourning Dove Cottage.
What prompted this post was a tree that was cut down over the weekend in our neighbor's yard right behind us. That neighbor (an elderly lady and an avid gardener) has now gone to a nursing home and her house is up for sale. She had a beautiful garden, by the way.
The tree that was cut down has made a big difference in the look of our back yard because it was along the fence line and gave us a lot of privacy, not to mention a haven for the birds, and it softened the look of the fence.
I miss the tree. It was a big beautiful Elaeagnus tree.
Let me show you some of the changes that have occurred in our back yard since we moved in 15 years ago.
This was the back yard looking toward the back of the house (before we painted the house) and before the patio was layed, and before the pergola was built, and before the back yard was fenced in.
The back yard when we moved in. A tree stump in the middle of the yard. One tree.
The above photo shows the neighbor's tree that was recently cut down.
This is the neighbor's house, minus the tree. It looks so bare now. We had the privacy fence put up several years ago.
So you see, many changes have occurred over the years.
And many more changes will come!

My you have made such a beautiful landscape over the years...so pretty and welcoming.
It is always hard to loose a big tree, even in a neighbors yard because it causes so many changes. But sometimes the change can be a good one.
You really have turned your yard into a beautiful garden. It is a shock when trees come down, but I have a feeling you will think of something to plant to regain your privacy.
Looking at your garden photos makes me anxious for springtime.
I know you will miss that tree. Your landscape has grow beautifully over the years.
Why in the world would they cut it down? It looked beautiful!
But don't worry... Your yard looks SO inviting!
Love the photos Donna!

Oh, what I'd give for that privacy fence and pretty yard! I'm starting over with bare bones. Not even sure where to start.

Lovely yard and garden!
Your garden is lovely. But change is always happening in a garden. T hink of this as a new opportunity.Of course I would mourn the loss of privacy too.
It's so wonderful to have photos to look back and see the changes! You've added so many wonderful plants but I hate to loose trees, too. You'll get more sunshine now though! ♥
Isn't it amazing when you look back at pictures on how things have progressed? This past weekend we were just talking to a good friend and we were talking about her backyard and how it has improved since they bought their house! Dog kennels, poison ivy & junk everywhere ~ you'd never guess that today!
Love your yard and all you've done to it Donna, the pergola is my favorite addition :) Lovely!!
Gardening and landscaping is a never-ending task, isn't it? But it is a most enjoyable one. It's amazing the difference one plant, flower, or TREE can make. You've definitely improved your surroundings, Donna. ;)
Blessings,
Liz @ The Brambleberry Cottage
You wouldn't think 1 tree could change so much but it does! I hope you didn't have alot of shade plants back there and now will have to move to a different spot in your yard.
Your yard is very pretty, Donna, and I can see how much love you have put into it. I know how sad it is to lose a beautiful big tree --we had one in our yard but had to cut it down after it was damaged by a few storms and an arborist told us it could not be saved. I cried and cried that day! Perhaps you can plant a new tree on your side to take its place!
It's all so lovely. You've done a lot of work on it for sure. Makes me long for summer. Our backyard is covered in snow. Mimi
It's incredible what you have done, Donna! Your yard is just lovely ... gives me inspiration for our little spot in this world. Thanks!!
Dear Donna, you and i share the same idea of what garden should look like. Over the years reading your blog I always found your garden absolutely stunning, so secluded, tranquil and yet lush - exactly as I like it.
I feel for you when it comes to the tree. After having lived with 5 neighbors that at all times decided what my view were going to look like (and who cut down numerous trees that ornated my views), I so understand how much you miss the tree.
Loved all the photographs.;)

Donna... I've so enjoyed seeing all these pics of your garden... a truly lovely place to be and enjoy... love it!
