Play

I meant to do my work today

But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,

And a butterfly flitted across the field,

And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land,

Tossing the grasses to and fro,

And a rainbow held out its shining hand ~

So what could I do but laugh and go?

In the pink

I'm feeling "pink" today. Everybody needs a little pink in their life and their home, don't you think? I love pink. Pink is a happy color; it's the color of roses, cotton candy, cherry ice cream, rosy cheeks, sea shells. Pink stands for "a woman's love". It's a beautiful color.

Most of my decorating consists of reds and golds, greens and blues; but I still find little places to put that touch; that loving little touch of pink!

A trip to the Vet

Poor Riley has an ear infection and I had to take him to the Vet today. Otis couldn't understand why he wasn't allowed to go along. I have never had these two apart before other then when they went to obedient school and they were just a year old. So Otis gave me that look and cried when we left.

We weren't gone long; Riley was given some ear drops (for 14 days) and then was told to come back for a follow-up visit. When we got home I could hear Otis barking as I was coming in the driveway. Well, Otis was ecstatic to see Riley and after some kisses they went running around the house and Riley seemed to forget he wasn't feeling well.

They are back on the sofa again, the two of them, very happy and shall we say, joined at the hip?!

I missed the party

Last evening I checked in to see Kim at Daisy Cottage and noticed that there was an invitation from Karla, who is celebrating her latest feature in Romantic Country magazine, to "share what you love about your home" and join in the party. I don't know Karla but I went to her site and saw all kinds of beautiful things. Be sure to go on over and see for yourself. Even though I missed the party I thought I'd share with you some of the things I love about my home too! It's a small cottage with a picket fence all around the back yard. It's an old home and I love the oldness, the cozyness, the creaky wood floors. I love the screened-in back porch where I spend hours, and of course, the garden ~ the cottage garden that took years of digging and planting and moving things around. So here are a few of my pics.

Autumn things

I did some Fall decorating but still haven't gotten around to buying those beautiful yellow mums and a big orange pumpkin. Maybe later this week. I did put a few things out and it's feeling more like the season, however, I wish the weather would cooperate now and give us some cooler temperatures, enough of this 90 degrees!

I'm surprised the mums in my garden still have tight little buds on, which tells me they won't be blooming till probably mid October. The asters are blooming and are so pretty.

Fall painting

I haven't done much painting lately, too many other things to do right now. In fact, I haven't even bought any mums or pumpkins yet!

This is a watercolor painting I did some time ago, 6 x 7.

A reminder of Fall.

After the rain

What a fresh feeling after a rain! It even smells fresh, and the plants are happy today!

Flock of birds

Say hello to the flock of birds! They are waiting for the Wilson Whirligig Festival in November where they hope to find a new home and add a splash of color to any back yard or window.

These little bird houses are hand crafted and handpainted.

This is what hubby and I have been doing on our weekends!

Banana nut bread

It poured down raining today and was a bit dreary so I thought it would be a good day to use up those three ripe bananas that have been staring me in the face for the last few days, saying, "bake some banana nut bread."

I'm glad I did. The sweet aroma filled the whole house and lifted my spirits. I made a cup of coffee and sat down and enjoyed a warm delicious piece.

A day with my sister

Happiness is spending a day with my sister.

Living an hour and a half apart sometimes makes it difficult to get together as often as we'd like, she's in Chapel Hill, I'm in Wilson. We decided to travel to historic downtown Hillsborough, NC, and The Daniel Boone Country Village which is filled with antique shops and the like. So much to see and do we hardly had enough time. We spent the day
shopping, eating, antiquing, laughing and talking.

Just the two of us together, having fun, my sister and me.

Thank you sister!

Outing

"Are you coming? We're ready to go."

A ride in the car today. A simple pleasure for Otis and Riley.

Tabletop treasure

This is one of my favorite pieces to use in the Fall. It's a Fitz and Floyd platter with beautiful colors of pumpkins, squash, corn, apples and grapes. It compliments anything you put on it. And don't you just love Fall colors!

Magazines

Aren't magazines wonderful? You can get so many ideas from them. I have a stash of magazines for every season, most of the holidays, and gardening. It's hard for me to throw them out and it seems that each time I look at them, I find something different. So right now, it's lots of ideas for Fall, some new recipes, art projects and crafts!

Lunch with hubby

Saturday was a beautiful day. Galen and I had our lunch outside under the shade tree in the back yard. The change in temperature from the hot weather we've been having was delightful, a relief, really. We even had our dinner alfresco!

Sketchbook

Doodling in the sketchbook today. I managed to catch Otis and Riley at different times on the back porch. Usually they don't sit still long enough for me to draw them.

Morning

I was up early this morning and as I opened all the doors to let in the cool morning air I realized that I should enjoy this time. It won't be long before we will be closing everything up to try to stay warm. For now the morning air feels invigorating and I know it will be warmer this afternoon which makes me happy, too, because even though its been very hot lately, its still hard to let go of summer.

Inspirational dream

A short time ago, I had a dream about my grandma and grandpa Minnich's house and when I woke the next morning I told Galen I just have to draw it, or paint it, just get it down on paper. The funny thing is, I remember vividly everything about their house; I think the dream was just a reminder.

I remember the "summer house"; the coal stove, the rocker in the corner, the big wooden kitchen table covered with oil cloth, the ice box, the mirror on the wall, the old wringer washer in the wash room, and the wood shop. I remember the old screen door and the sound of it.

In the "winter house" I remember the water bucket on the counter with the enamelware dipper, the cups and plates, the table, the coal stove and the pipe up to the bedrooms, the plastic curtains, the corner shelf where she had nic nacks, the lanoleum in the living room, the picture above the sofa, her sewing machine. The garret where we played, the cellar where she kept canned watermelon rind and peaches.

Outside I remember the porch with the rockers, the water pump, the tulip tree we climbed, the sweetpeas and daylilies, the lilac tree, the pear tree, the apple trees, the barns, the garden, the outhouse, the tobacco fields ~ I could go on and on.

I'm not sure why I felt I needed to put it on paper; maybe because the house is no longer there, but when I look at it now, all those wonderful childhood memories come flooding back, and I'm glad I did.

"Sandcastles"

This morning I finished reading "Sandcastles" by Luanne Rice. FABULOUS! I haven't read any of her other books, this was the first one. What a great story. I may have to browse through the bookstore and check out her other ones. Read it, I think you'll like it!

Remembering 9/11

On this anniversary of our country's worst tragedy, we honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain.

Morning light

This morning as I was having my coffee on the back screened-in porch I was struck by how beautiful the sun's rays were, coming in and lighting up the porch. I love the morning sun and it brought such brilliance to everthing it touched.
It was just what I needed to jump-start my day!

Lady vases

Are you familiar with lady vases? Here is my small collection. Made of clay and hand-signed by the artist, Susan Paley, each one has a name. These three ladies are named ~ "Victoria", "Patty Picked Posies", and "Lucy Latte". They are the Bella Casa collection by Ganz. Aren't they cute!

My sister gave me "Patty Picked Posies" and I bought the other two at antique shops.

I added the grapes to "Patty Picked Posies" and the three of them are in the kitchen.

Purple bird, red bird

More bird birdhouses! I finished these two last week. Red bird, purple bird. They need hooks on top which Galen will have to attach and then they will be ready to hang. Wouldn't you like to have a bird to hang in your garden?

Fun find!

Yesterday I stopped at our Goodwill store and found these sparkly picture frames. Aren't they great, and all I spent was $2.69.

Garden ornaments

Little things we add to the garden to make it special.
